The Story

Namakubi (生首), meaning "freshly-severed head," is a striking Japanese motif intended to shock and frighten. Originating in Edo period (1603-1868) ukiyo-e artwork, it remains prevalent in traditional irezumi (tattoos) today.

In Japanese folklore, there is a legend about a mythical giant snake demon known as Uwabami (蟒蛇). These massive serpents are famous for their enormous appetite and their tendency to ambush travelers. Uwabami are particularly known for consuming vast amounts of food and, most importantly, sake (日本酒). This folklore led to the Japanese expression used to poke fun at a person who drinks a lot. “You drink a lot! Like a giant snake (uwabami)!”
