The Story
Jane Louise 'Candy' Kendeigh was a true American Hero. Upon graduation from the US Navy's School of Air Evacuation in 1945, she was assigned to a Naval Air Transport Service medical evacuation squadron, VRE-1 which was deployed to active combat zones in the Pacific.
On March 6, 1945, Jane was the first pilot to descend in her plane in an effort to aid wounded American soldiers. In this moment, she would become the first naval flight nurse to land at Iwo Jima.
